ENT triage prioritizes airway safety, swallowing status, hearing loss onset, bleeding severity, and infection progression.
When to request same-day medical help
- Persistent sore throat, sinus pressure, ear pain, or hoarseness beyond 48 hours.
- Hearing decline, tinnitus, or recurrent vertigo affecting function.
- Repeated nosebleeds or chronic nasal obstruction worsening over time.
- ENT symptoms are no longer controlled with usual conservative measures.
Emergency warning signs (call now)
- Throat swelling, drooling, stridor, or breathing difficulty.
- Sudden hearing loss or severe vertigo with neurologic symptoms.
- Uncontrolled nosebleed lasting more than 20 minutes despite compression.
- High fever with severe neck pain, confusion, or systemic deterioration.
What to do while waiting for the doctor
- Keep hydration and avoid smoke or irritants.
- For nosebleed, sit forward and apply firm nasal compression.
- Do not insert objects or drops into painful ear without guidance.
- Track onset and triggers of hearing or balance episodes.
Good outcomes usually come from early escalation, clear symptom tracking, and disciplined waiting steps.
