What is this medicine?

French reference leaflet: PIROXICAM BIOGARAN 10 mg, gélule. Confirm indications in Morocco with a pharmacist.

Pharmacotherapeutic class: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, ATC code: M01AC01. Before prescribing piroxicam to you, your doctor must evaluate the benefits that this medicine is likely to bring you compared to the risk incurred of developing adverse effects. Due to this treatment, your doctor may need to have you undergo periodic medical examinations and will then be required to indicate the frequency at which you must be examined. PIROXICAM BIOGARAN is used to relieve certain symptoms of osteoarthritis (degenerative disease of the joints), rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis (rheumatological condition of the spine), such as swelling, stiffness, and joint pain. It does not cure osteoarthritis and will only relieve it for as long as you continue to take it. Your doctor will only be required to prescribe piroxicam to you in the event of symptoms insufficiently relieved with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Uses

Piroxicam is indicated in the symptomatic treatment of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. Due to its tolerability profile (see sections 4.2, 4.3 and 4.4), piroxicam must not be used as first-line treatment when NSAID treatment is indicated.

The decision to prescribe a specialty containing piroxicam must be based on the assessment of all specific risks for each patient (see sections 4.3 and 4.4).

Driving

Warn patients of the possible onset of dizziness and drowsiness.

Adverse effects

Clinical studies and epidemiological data suggest that the use of certain NSAIDs (especially when used at high doses and for a long duration) may be associated with a slight increase in the risk of an arterial thrombotic event (for example, myocardial infarction or stroke) (see section 4.4).

The most frequently observed adverse effects are gastrointestinal in nature. Peptic ulcers, perforations or gastrointestinal haemorrhages, sometimes fatal, may occur, particularly in the elderly (see section 4.4). Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence, constipation, dyspepsia, ulcerative stomatitis, abdominal pain, melaena, haematemesis, exacerbation of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease (see section 4.4) have been reported following the administration of NSAIDs. Less frequently, gastritis has been observed.

Oedema, hypertension and heart failure have been reported in association with NSAID treatment.

The table below presents the adverse effects by medical discipline and by frequency. Within each frequency group, the adverse effects are classified in descending order of severity.
