What is this medicine?

French reference leaflet: ACARBOSE VIATRIS 50 mg, comprimé. Confirm indications in Morocco with a pharmacist.

Pharmacotherapeutic class: alpha-glucosidase inhibitors - ATC code: A 1 0BF01 ACARBOSE VIATRIS is an antidiabetic. It delays the digestion and absorption of sugars by the intestine. Its action delays the passage of sugar into the blood, thereby decreasing the rise in blood sugar levels that occurs after a meal. In which cases is it used? This medicine is used to treat a certain form of diabetes called "type 2 diabetes" (or non-insulin-dependent diabetes), in conjunction with diet. It is reserved for adults. The efficacy and tolerability of ACARBOSE VIATRIS have not been established in children under 18 years of age.

Uses

Treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes, as an adjunct to diet, as monotherapy or in combination with other antidiabetic therapies.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Pregnancy

Risk related to diabetes

Diabetes (gestational or permanent), when not balanced, is the cause of an increase in congenital malformations and perinatal mortality. In the periconceptional period, as good a balance of diabetes as possible must be achieved, in order to reduce the malformation risk.

Risk related to acarbose

Animal studies have not demonstrated any teratogenic effect. In the absence of a teratogenic effect in animals, a malformation effect in the human species is not expected.

Indeed, to date, substances responsible for malformations in the human species have proven to be teratogenic in animals during well-conducted studies on two species.

Clinically, there is currently no sufficiently relevant data on a possible malformation or foetotoxic effect of acarbose when administered during pregnancy.

Management

Rebalancing diabetes allows for normalizing the course of pregnancy in this category of patients.

It imperatively requires insulin, regardless of the type of diabetes, I or II, gestational or permanent.

In the latter case, it is recommended to stop treatment with acarbose and to take over with insulin as soon as a pregnancy is envisaged or in case of fortuitous discovery of a pregnancy exposed to this medicine: in this case, this does not constitute the systematic argument to advise an interruption of pregnancy but leads to a cautious attitude and to oriented prenatal surveillance.

Neonatal blood glucose monitoring is recommended

Breastfeeding

After administration of radiolabelled acarbose in the lactating rat, a small amount was detected in the milk. To date, there is no similar data in humans.

However, as the risk of acarbose effects on the breastfed child cannot be excluded, this medicine is not recommended in case of breastfeeding.

Driving

No data is available on the effects of treatment with acarbose on the ability to drive vehicles and use machines.
