Pharmacotherapeutic class: nucleoside analogue - ATC code: J05A F01 Retrovir is indicated for the treatment of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection. The active substance of Retrovir is zidovudine. Retrovir is a medicine belonging to the class of antiretrovirals. It belongs to the category of medicines called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTI). Retrovir does not lead to a cure of the HIV infection. It allows for reducing the amount of virus in your body and maintaining it at a low level. Retrovir also increases the number of CD4 cells in your blood. CD4 cells are a type of blood cells (white blood cells) important for helping your body fight infections. Retrovir is used, in association with other medicines (combination of antiretrovirals), to treat HIV in adults and children. In order to control your HIV infection and stop the worsening of your disease, it is important that you take all your medicines. If you are pregnant, your doctor may ask you to take Retrovir with the aim of helping to reduce the risk of HIV transmission to your baby before birth. After birth, Retrovir may be given to your baby to help prevent them from being infected with HIV. HIV infection is transmitted by sexual contact with an already infected person, or by contact with infected blood (for example, by sharing injection needles).
